What to Do in Pisa and the Surrounding Area? Travel Guide

In partnership with Transavia

When we talk about Pisa, we immediately think of its Leaning Tower, which seems to defy the laws of gravity, but this Tuscan city is so much more than just this monument: behind this iconic landmark lies a vibrant destination where a wealth of activities await you.

So what to do in Pisa? In this travel guide, you’ll find ideas for getting off the beaten track and exploring the area around the city. Have a great trip to Italy!

Pisa in short

By plane, from Paris, it takes just 1 hour 50 minutes to reach Pisa Airport. The French airline Transavia offers four return flights a week (on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays) from €41 one way:

From April to June and from September to October, to avoid the summer crowds.

Two days are enough to explore the city of Pisa, but allow three or four days so you have time to visit the surrounding area as well.

The city of Pisa is relatively small and is easy to explore on foot, but to explore the surrounding area, you’ll need to take a taxi or hire a car

What to do in pisa?

Climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa

It’s, of course, THE must-see attraction in Pisa: seeing its famous Leaning Tower and, why not, climbing to the top!

This tower is actually the cathedral’s bell tower. Very early on in its construction, it began to lean due to a fault in the foundations and its enormous weight (15,000 tonnes of marble!). Following a risk of collapse, the tower was closed to the public in 1990 and major works were undertaken to stabilise it. Now secure, the tower has been open to visitors again since 2001.

From the top of the tower, you can enjoy a superb view of Pisa and the bells, but please note: only 60 visitors are allowed in every 15 minutes, so it is advisable to book in advance.

🎟️ Tickets can be purchased on the website opapisa.it

Visit the cathedral, the baptistery and the cemetery

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the four monuments that make up Piazza del Miracoli (Square of Miracles), and it would be a shame not to visit the other three: the baptistery, the cathedral and the cemetery.

All these monuments were conceived as a single entity: the baptistery symbolising birth, the cathedral symbolising life, and the cemetery symbolising death.

The baptistery offers a superb view of the cathedral and, every half hour, the doors close to allow a singer to demonstrate the venue’s exceptional acoustics in just a few minutes.

What to Do in Pisa and the Surrounding Area? Travel Guide 4

The cathedral is the centrepiece of this complex. Its style is a blend of Roman and Byzantine architecture. If you visit, be sure to look up and admire its magnificent coffered ceiling.

What to Do in Pisa and the Surrounding Area? Travel Guide 5

As for the cemetery (camposanto), it is a veritable open-air museum. The tombs within it are exquisitely crafted, and the frescoes covering their walls depict scenes from the Bible. Having been severely damaged by the bombing in 1944, the cemetery has since been undergoing restoration work, which is still ongoing.

🎟️ Tickets for all these sites can be purchased on the website opapisa.it

Climb the ramparts

The medieval walls that enclose part of the square offer some of the finest views of the monuments mentioned above. It is from here that you can take the best photographs.

Strolling through the streets

Pisa isn’t a very big city. Take the time to get lost in it and wander through its streets. Its cobbled alleyways, lined with colourful houses, are full of charm!

See some street art

You wouldn’t normally think of Pisa in this context, and yet… it’s a city home to some masterpieces of street art. Notably “Tuttomondo”, one of Keith Haring’s largest works. Just a short walk away, don’t miss Eduardo Kobra’s tribute to Galileo, which depicts the scientist looking through a telescope shaped like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Where to eat in Pisa? Top picks

Pisa has no shortage of great places to visit. Here are a few that I highly recommend:

Strapizzami Slice Pizza: for pizzas and cecina

If you’re looking for a quick, cheap bite to eat, this is the perfect spot. You can buy slices of pizza to take away and enjoy at one of the few tables on the terrace.

You’ll also find cecina there, a chickpea patty that’s a local speciality and which I highly recommend you try (at €2 a slice, you’d be mad to miss out!).

As for drinks, I recommend you try Spumador, a non-alcoholic sparkling drink that’s only available in this part of Italy.

📍 69 Via S. Lorenzo

The Sky Lounge at the Grand Hotel Duomo: drinks with a view

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a drink or dinner with one of the most beautiful views of Pisa, this is the place for you. From here, you can admire the Tower, the cathedral and the baptistery, as well as the city’s rooftops. It’s particularly stunning at sunset, when the buildings take on a golden hue.

The food on offer is Italian cuisine – perhaps not the most memorable, but certainly decent.

📍 94 Via Santa Maria

Rufus: an excellent artisan ice cream parlour

If you fancy some artisan ice cream, head to Rufus. It’s a brilliant place to go, offering vegan options too, at very reasonable prices.

Where to stay in Pisa?

I checked into the Bagni di Pisa hotel, located in the spa town of San Giuliano Terme, 6 km from Pisa.

This is a spa hotel where guests can make the most of their stay by resting and relaxing in one of the hotel’s two spas.

What to do around Pisa?

It would be a shame to go to Pisa and not explore the surrounding area. Get off the beaten track and away from the tourist hotspots by setting off to discover these hidden gems:

Go and see the sea

It takes just 30 minutes by bike or a few minutes by taxi to reach the seaside. The ride is very pleasant and takes you through lovely countryside along a cycle path that follows the route of an old railway line.

Later in the evening, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over the sea.

Visit the Chartreuse and the Natural History Museum

Founded in 1366, the Certosa di Pisa is a splendid architectural complex which includes, in particular, a magnificent Baroque church. The monastery is also renowned for its fresco of The Last Supper in the refectory, painted in 1587 by the Italian artist Bernardino Pocchetti.

What to Do in Pisa and the Surrounding Area? Travel Guide 22

One wing of the monastery now houses a surprising Natural History Museum. Some of the rooms are in need of refurbishment, but others, which have recently been restored, are incredible. This is particularly true of the spectacular Cetacean Gallery, where numerous skeletons are on display in a glass-walled room from which you can admire the monastery and the surrounding countryside.

Take part in a workshop on olive oil

Let’s head to the Azienda Agricola Elter Francesco olive grove, a little corner of paradise nestled in the hills. With nearly 5,000 organically grown olive trees, high-quality olive oil is produced here.

You can take part in a tasting workshop and even enjoy a delicious and surprising meal with food and olive oil pairings.

🎟️ Tasting workshop: €20 per person. Book online at https://www.agrielter.com/

Visit one of Italy’s most beautiful villages

Let’s head to Peccioli, which was voted ‘Italy’s most beautiful village’ in 2024. It’s an open-air museum, with numerous works of art dotted throughout the town.

What to Do in Pisa and the Surrounding Area? Travel Guide 29

And the colourful village of Ghizzano

Just next to Peccioli, the village of Ghizzano is famous for its street lined with colourful houses painted by the artist David Tremlett.

Try some local wines

Head to Podere de la Chiesa. This winery, located about 45 minutes from Pisa, is nestled amongst the hills. It is in a very attractive modern building, set amongst the vineyards, that you can sample local wines.

Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to your health. Please drink in moderation.
