Summary
The history of Bourbon-l’Archambault castle
The castle of Bourbon-l’Archambault is one of the founding places in the history of the House of Bourbon. Set on a rocky spur overlooking the River Burge and trade routes, the site occupies the foundations of a stronghold that combined military, administrative and residential functions. The Archambaud de Bourbon family established their power here in the early Middle Ages, and it was here that the seigniory’s name took on its renown.
At the end of the 13th century, the castle entered the Capetian line thanks to the marriage of Beatrice de Bourgogne to Robert de Clermont, son of Saint Louis. From this time onwards, the fortress was considerably reinforced, equipped with massive circular towers, some of which still survive.

With the rise of the Duchy of Bourbon in the 14th century, the castle became the center of princely power of the highest order. Louis I de Bourbon, grandson of Saint-Louis, had a Sainte-Chapelle built there to house prestigious relics, while his son Louis II undertook major works after the ravages of the English wars. The fortress then boasted up to fifteen towers and established itself as one of the most powerful in the kingdom.
What is a Sainte-Chapelle?
In addition to the most famous one in Paris, there are still a dozen or so Saintes Chapelles in France. A holy chapel is recognized when it cumulates the following five criteria:
- it was founded by Saint Louis or one of his descendants,
- it housed a relic detached from the holy relics of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris (a piece of the crown of thorns or the True Cross),
- it is the chapel of a royal or princely castle,
- its architecture follows the plan of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris,
- services are celebrated by canons every 3 hours, as in Paris
In 1531, the duchy of Bourbonnais was attached to the crown. The castle then entered a phase of decline. From the 16th century onwards, medieval fortresses were no longer needed and the castle was abandoned, inhabited only by canons who looked after the Saintes-Chapelles.
The 18th century marks a dark period for the castle after a fire that ravaged part of it, the demolition of a large part of the estate is ordered during the Revolution. Only the three towers on the northern front were spared, serving as the local prison.

In the 19th century, the poet Achille Allier campaigned to save the remains, which were soon protected as historic monuments. The estate then passed to the House of Orléans, then to the Duc d’Aumale, before being conferred in 1974 to the Fondation Saint-Louis by the Count of Paris. Today, although in ruins, the castle of Bourbon-l’Archambault remains a high place of memory, a symbol of the power of the Bourbons and a witness to the richness of French feudal history.

Visit Bourbon-l’Archambault castle
Today, therefore, only vestiges of this castle remain. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1862, the site offers remarkable architectural remains: a seigneurial loggia, three crenellated north towers, rib vaults and monumental chimneys, evidence of an ancient pomp.

A visit to the castle gives an insight into the lifestyle of its former owners. 3D reconstructions also help us to better understand how the castle was decorated in its heyday.

Of course, the highlight of the visit takes place at the top of the towers, with an exceptional panorama of both the castle and the surrounding area.
