The Grand Palais in Paris is devoting an exceptional exhibition to Chiharu Shiota, the world-renowned Japanese artist, from December 11 2024 to March 19 2025. In an immersive scenography, this retrospective unveils more than 20 years of creation through monumental installations, sculptures and multimedia works. An unmissable event for lovers of contemporary art.

Chiharu Shiota: between memory and reverie

Born in Osaka in 1972, Chiharu Shiota lives and works in Berlin. Renowned for her gigantic canvases of intertwined threads, she combines performance, sculpture and installation to explore universal themes such as memory, temporality and dreams. Her sensitive approach engages the soul and engages the viewer in an experience that is both physical and emotional. Among her honours is her participation in the 2015 Venice Biennale, where she represented Japan.

A major exhibition at the Grand Palais

Co-organised with Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum, this retrospective, entitled ” The Soul Trembles “, is the largest ever dedicated to the artist in France. Spanning more than 1,200 sq. metres, the exhibition will feature seven monumental installations and a range of previously unseen works. These creations, combining wool, metal and everyday objects, envelop the viewer in a dreamlike, almost mystical atmosphere.

By immersing themselves in labyrinths of red or black threads, visitors become actors in their own exploration, guided by Shiota’s desire to ” make the soul tremble “. Each work questions our relationship with memory, the fragility of life and our own place in a complex network of human connections.

A scenography designed to sublimate emotions

Designed by Atelier Jodar, the scenography plays a key role in the experience. The gigantic volumes of the Grand Palais galleries lend themselves perfectly to Shiota’s immersive installations, providing a spectacular setting for his works. Video performances, drawings and archival documents round off the exhibition, providing a total immersion in the artist’s universe.
