The Auvergne, land of volcanoes, is also a region rich in history. From the Middle Ages onwards, its rugged terrain, fertile valleys and trade routes gave rise to a multitude of fortresses designed to protect territories, watch over passages and assert the power of lords.
Today, this memory is being rediscovered thanks to La Route historique des châteaux d’Auvergne, a unique cultural and tourist itinerary that brings together some fifty remarkable castles and mansions.

Summary
Castles in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes?
When we think of visiting castles, we immediately think of the Loire castles, but the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is not to be outdone there are 227 castles in the region !
In Auvergne, some fifty castles and historic residences have joined forces to form La Route Historique des Châteaux d’Auvergne (Historic road of Auvergne’s castles). A grouping of private and public castles open to visitors, whose mission is to preserve these high-maintenance edifices, but also to help visitors understand the role they played in regional history.

A variety of styles and eras and a lively cultural immersion
The richness of the Route lies in the diversity of its sites:
- Medieval fortresses like Château de Murol (Puy-de-Dôme), perched on their rocky outcrops, are a reminder of feudal struggles.
- Renaissance demeures, such as the Château de Parentignat (near Issoire), testify to a more refined art of living.
- Classic and romantic residences, such as Château de La Bâtisse or Château de Ravel, open their salons and gardens to the discovery of another face of Auvergne.
Each of these places tells a different story, from battles and intrigues to local dynasties and changing lifestyles.

Beyond the architectural visit, the Route offers a living experience: historical shows, medieval re-enactments, concerts, children’s workshops or exhibitions. These events bring these old stones to life, appealing to heritage enthusiasts and families alike.
Some of these châteaux, such as Château de Riau or Château d’Avrilly, even offer stays with a range of bed and breakfasts or gîtes, perfect for living the château life !
