In the heart of Bordeaux, on the banks of the Garonne, stands a building that is as spectacular as it is unexpected: the Cité du Vin. With its bold architecture, which evokes the movement of wine in a glass, this unique cultural venue has become one of the city’s landmarks in just a few years.

But contrary to what one might think, the Cité du Vin isn’t just for lovers of fine wines or connoisseurs—quite the opposite! Here, visitors come to discover a culture, a history, and a global heritage that go far beyond a simple wine tasting.

Your visit has plenty of surprises in store, especially since 2026 is a special year: the Cité du Vin is celebrating its 10th anniversary. So, what exactly is there to see? Here’s a sneak peek at what awaits you!

A tour open to everyone, even if you don’t know much about wine

Contrary to what one might think, the Cité du Vin isn’t just for connoisseurs. You can visit simply out of curiosity and have a wonderful time. Everything is designed to be easy to understand, even if you’re new to the subject. The permanent exhibition explains the basics in a simple and engaging way, without any complicated jargon.

Above all, there is no encouragement to drink alcohol. The tour focuses primarily on wine culture: its history, the landscapes, the various professions in the wine industry, and the traditions associated with it in different countries. You can therefore enjoy the experience without needing to be an expert.

The many interactive and fun exhibits are sure to appeal to children and teenagers, making it a family-friendly visit.

An immersive experience

The tour can be taken in either direction and at your own pace: you’ll learn what a vineyard is and how grapes grow. Then you’ll explore the different stages of winemaking. You’ll discover how grapes are turned into wine, how this beverage has spread throughout history and across civilizations, and why Bordeaux has become such a renowned wine-growing region.

Que voir à la cité du vin ?

A self-guided tour

At the Cité du Vin, everyone takes charge of their own tour. You can explore the museum in whatever order you like and discover the exhibits of your choice.

In total, there’s over 6 hours of content waiting for you, but you can choose the topics that interest you most and go at your own pace. On average, the tour takes 2 to 3 hours to complete.

A CUSTOMIZED TOUR: A digital guide, known as the “tour companion,” guides us through the visit. It is available in 8 languages, and a “junior tour” offers a customized experience for children who can read.

Interactive and immersive experiences

The Cité du Vin isn’t just a museum where you spend your time reading signs. The tour alternates between various types of experiences, making for a very engaging visit.

Some exhibits simply explain how grapevines work or how wine is made. Others are much more interactive. For example, you can test your sense of smell to identify wine aromas, observe different colors, or even symbolically stomp on grapes. There are also fun little quizzes to help you discover which type of wine best matches your personality.

And then there are immersive experiences, which are often quite impressive: flying over vineyards, boarding a boat carrying wine, or even exploring a 360° cinema dedicated to the various aspects of winemaking throughout the year.

A wine tasting with a view of Bordeaux

The tour ends at the Belvédère, at the very top of the building, with a view of Bordeaux and the Garonne River!

The ticket includes the option to sample one or two glasses of your choice from a selection of 15 wines from Bordeaux, France, and around the world to enhance the sensory experience. But again, nothing is mandatory: if you don’t drink alcohol, you can simply enjoy the view while sipping fruit juices from Maison Meneau (local and organic!).
