Every year in November, the town of Montier-en-Der beats to the rhythm of the “click-clack” sound made by cameras! For 4 days, this town in the Haute-Marne region plays host to all those who love photography, as they gather for the International Wildlife and Nature Photography Festival.

On 16, 17, 18 and 19 November, Montier will be hosting the 26th edition of this festival, with a rich and varied programme aimed at both professionals and photography enthusiasts. Here’s an overview of what to expect at this year’s Montier Photo Festival.

26 years of passion for photography

The Montier Photo Festival was born in 1996 from the crazy idea of a group of friends with a passion for photography and nature, who organised a photography exhibition. In just two days, the event attracted no fewer than 4,000 visitors!

In response to this success, an association was formed to organise subsequent editions. Over the years, the Festival has become a unique event in Europe, a must for amateur and professional photographers, nature lovers and the general public alike.

Over the past 26 years, the Festival has welcomed many famous names, including Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Isabelle Autissier, Jacques Perrin and Hubert Reeves, as well as internationally renowned photographers such as Vincent Munier, Frans Lanting, Steve Winter and James Balog. Montier now attracts over 45,000 visitors every year!

 Patrons of the 2023 edition

Two great photographers are the patrons of this 2023 edition: Pascal Maitre and Olivier Larrey.

Pascal Maitre

This renowned photojournalist has developed a passion for Africa. He has documented lifestyles, conflicts and traditions in some forty countries, but his reports have also taken him to the Middle East, South America and Siberia.

At the show, he will be presenting the “Hybris” exhibition, with a selection of photographs taken from various news reports, showing a battered but magnificent planet.

Olivier Larrey

Fascinated by the world of the cold, Olivier Larrey has travelled to the poles as well as the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, bringing back some superb wildlife documentaries. Accompanied by animal painter Yves Fagniart, he will be previewing his new film “Affût aux loups”, made with Tanguy Dumortier, presenter of Belgium’s longest-running nature and environment programme , “The extraordinary garden”. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the public. You can book your place here.

For this new quarter-century, the Montier Festival has decided to highlight two territories at each edition. This year, the focus will be on the Amazon and British Columbia.

The program of the 2023 Montier Festival

Far from being just for professionals, the Montier Festival offers a rich programme to suit all tastes and ages, with Biodiversity as the main theme.

This year’s highlights include watching the cranes rise on the banks of the River Der in the company of an ornithological guide, taking part in origami workshops with the whole family, giving the planet a helping hand by taking part in a rubbish collection, meeting Yann Arthus Bertrand at his lecture or attending the Amazon show on Saturday evening…

Exhibitions

There are 100 indoor and outdoor exhibitions to discover, spread over 16 sites in Haute-Marne and Marne.
